In an odd incident that could be taken from the “News of the Weird” vault, a Boulder woman chased down a man who assaulted her while she was riding her bicycle. What’s even creepier is that she had her baby in a carrier on her back when she was attacked. Still, she managed to call for help while chasing down her attacker! Bra-vo.
We’ve got a big weekend of events coming up, so plan your route and hydration plan accordingly:
This Saturday and Sunday, in Sloan’s Lake Park, we’re parking bikes at the annual Dragon Boat festival. For the guys rowing these boats, this is a serious racing league, and many of the boats come from across the nation to race here. This is especially convenient for all the Denver, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge residents living in close proximity. Ride your bike over, beat the traffic, and hey!, we’ll park it for you.
Sunday morning is the New Belgium Urban Assault race. Entries are already filled up, but that doesn’t mean you can’t observe the chaos and bikerifficness. Last year I won a helmet in some parking lot sprints after the main event, so be ready to put the hammer down if you are racing, you’ll be richly rewarded for your labors.
And to wind things down, as always, we’ll be in city park with a bike corral already set up to welcome your bike while you enjoy City Park Jazz. There’s no better way to wind down a weekend, so ride on over and join us for the fun.
It’s only the most fun night-time, closed course, community bike ride Denver has to offer. If you aren’t riding the Greyhound out to the Iowa state border for RAGBRAI, you should absolutely make it to the Moonlight Classic.
Ever feel like Denver needs better mapping for different bike rides? Now is your chance to contribute to a better mapping system. This Saturday and Sunday starting at 1 PM, there will be a GPS mapping event for the purpose of mapping out and publicizing different rides in the Denver area. More info can be found here.
The actual mapping entails riding a route of your choice, and then entering data about it at the party afterwards. If a lot of people contribute, it will be a great resource for exploring new rides in the area.
It all starts at 1 PM at 1792 Wynkoop St, #508, Denver, CO 80202, and wraps up with beverages at Wynkoop Brewery starting at 5 PM.
If you are a bicycle maniac like me, this will be your warmup for the moonlight classic which is starting later that evening at 8 PM in Civic Center Park.
The Front Rangers Bicycle Club is hosting the Junior Criterium State Championships on August 3rd in Denver’s own Golden Triangle. If you have ever needed motivation to get out riding harder and more often, you should absolutely attend this event, because I can guarantee that the teenagers racing for the state championship will be riding far faster than you can, lets just hope we can still beat the ten year old age group =)
The Front Rangers are looking for volunteer Course Marshalls for this Criterium. The start/finish line is at 9th and Bannock Street, just north of Denver Health. There will be racing from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm with eleven corners that have to be protected by course marshals. They offer an orange vest, a two way radio, a free lunch, and an opportunity to watch one of the premier Denver bicycle races up close and personal.
Interested volunteers should contact David Stevens at dstevens26@gmail.com or (303 475-0980) for a shift assignment.
The commercial cuts off before we see the kid try to get that thing through his state’s emissions controls, try to register a vehicle he found at his local DMV, or pour $80 into the gas tank. Well, the commercial is all about fahrvegnugen (pleasure in the operation of a motor vehicle), so dealing with the unpleasantness is left out.
As people nationwide are exposed to the pleasures of riding for transportation, expect increasing hostility from the obvious losers, the auto industry.
The BikeDenver Board convenes on the second Thursday of each month to discuss business, make plans and update one another on progress.
Our meetings are…
Open to the Public
An Opportunity to Work for Cyclist Rights
Your Chance to Voice Cyclist Concerns and New Ideas
A Place to Meet Riders Like You
Meetings are almost always held on the second Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm. But the location has changed several times in the last few months. Meetings are now being held in the Alliance Building at 1536 Wynkoop. Our meetings will be in the 2nd floor Conference Room. We’re hoping to stay in this location for a while, so feel free to memorize it!
