August’s Bicycle-Friendly Business promotes biking “for the greater good!”

BikeDenver is pleased to announce TIAA-CREF as this month’s Bicycle-Friendly Business! You’ve surely seen their 1670 Broadway building on the downtown Denver skyline, and you may be familiar with the company’s motto: “Financial Services for the Greater Good.” But did you know TIAA-CREF also helps promote bicycling for the greater good?

Tom Davis, TIAA-CREF’s Corporate Safety and Security Manager, tells us that the company has developed a best-in-class model for corporate biking, and he’s got plenty to back up his claim. Not only does the company sponsor and help plan regional rides like the CU Buffalo Classic and the CSU Ram Ride, they also host aid stations at events like Tour de Cure and Bike to Work Day (pictured right). In addition, Team TIAA-CREF’s corporate Bike Ambassadors raised more than $18k for local cycling events in 2010, much of which was donated by employees.

TIAA-CREF’s Denver workforce enjoys bike-friendly, planet-friendly transportation options that make it easier to leave the car at home. These options include secure, CCTV-monitored indoor bike storage (pictured left) and RTD Eco Passes. As Tom puts it, simply having a place to park a bike “removes one of the barriers of bike-commuting…where to safely secure your bike downtown!”  Removing even small barriers like these can yield big results; on this year’s Bike to Work Day alone, 78 TIAA-CREF employees pedaled a combined 800 miles. “That’s a lot of carbon offset!” Tom says. BikeDenver agrees, and gives TIAA-CREF a big thumbs-up for helping make Denver a better place to ride a bike!
