Get ready to get MUCCY…Mile High Urban CX Chaos is coming to the RiNO district! This event is one you will not want to miss because it is, in fact, one-of-a-kind. It’s the very first urban cyclocross event in Denver, and the first adaptive cyclocross course in the US. Adaptive means that it will accommodate people with adaptive bicycle equipment, and the course is especially dedicated to wounded veterans who have served our country. Deirdre Moynihan, event manager, was inspired to create the adaptive course when she watched a former soldier on adaptive mountain bike equipment skillfully and smoothly navigate the terrain at Winter Park. She also believes we “have an obligation to provide an accessible world to everyone,” so it was natural to develop the first adaptive cyclocross course here in Denver.
If you are not familiar with cyclocross (and many are not unless they are involved in the sport) cyclocross (CX) is a form of bicycle racing that takes place on a short circuit that can feature pavement, dirt, sand, mud, grass, steep hills, and obstacles that require cyclists to dismount their bikes. While the sport of cyclocross is most popular in European countries, its popularity in the United States has continually been on the rise. It is a fantastic spectator sport because the audience can see a great deal without much relocation.
Why else won’t you want to miss this pioneering event? Location, location, location! The River North arts district provides a unique landscape for the course. Industry, graffiti, abandoned tires, empty lots, and art will make for an exciting race through urban Denver. And one more thing…Piep, BikeDenver’s Executive Director, will be singing the national anthem with her acapella group Amazing Bass. Go Piep!
So, we encourage everyone to stop by and watch, and be part of it all. Or if you would like, you can volunteer – help is needed as course marshals and TiPS Trained volunteers are needed for the beer garden. If you are interested in volunteering email deemmoynihan(at)gmail.com.
