Denver News

Our weather report says it’s going to be an awesome day to ride Saturday, October 24th, so If you want to get to the Velo Swap on your bike here’s a couple of routes you might consider.

Jump on the South Platte river trail: at around 2 miles North of Confluence of Cherry Creek and South Platte, and just North of a steep ramp up to 38th Street, you will see a sign on the East side of the river near the Pepsi building, that says “Globeville Landing Park”.  Take the concrete path from the river to Arkins Ct. and turn left in front of the Pepsi building – sign on building says “Rocky Mountain Refurb” between Pepsi logos.  You will soon see the Coliseum; follow the road you are on around the Coliseum parking lot to 44th Ave at McFarland.

Turn left on 44th in front of the Coliseum and go under I-70 to the National Western Complex. Look for BikeDenver bike parking as you approach the National Western building.

If you are riding from the South East, check out the map included here to find your way to 35th Avenue. Take 35th Ave. to Steele St. and go North to 44th Ave.  Turn left, West, on 44th Ave. and find Clayton to go North under I-70 to 47th Ave.  Turn West on 47th and looking for a jog at York, make your way over to Franklin or Humboldt  on 47th and find a way through event traffic control to the bike parking on the I-70 side of the exhibition hall where the Velo will rock for the rest of the day.  We’ll park trailers and everything bicycle so save the hassle of getting a car in the area and RIDE!

Doors open at 9am, but lines form early.  Look for the BikeDenver booth just inside the South East door – we’ll have free Starbucks coffee, and we’ll store your shopping items or other stuff at our indoor bag check.  Support BikeDenver by making a donation at bike or bag parking, or become a member at your VELO special rate of $25.  See you there!!

Local Eco-Broker Bridgit Slevin has been offering Home Buyer Bike Tours every Saturday (weather permitting) since June. She caused a splash this weekend when 9news ran a story on her tours that was picked up by CNN. See the story here. Bridget says ” Summertime means that a lot of people are in the market for a new home, or are researching what to do to improve the value of their current home, and Home Buyer Bike Tours is a fun and relaxed way to view new listings in the Denver Urban area. You’ll get to see some of the top homes on the market, and have the time to notice the gardens, area highlights, and really get to know your neighborhood… all while burning calories and zero fossil fuels! Did you realize that you can burn approximately 173 calories an hour just by casually cruising on a bike?”

Each Saturday Bridgit chooses newer listings in a specific urban neighborhood based on type of home, how well it shows, green features, or price range of home. Tours begin at 10 am. Each week Bridgit posts the starting place, usually a local coffee shop or restaurant. The tour takes about two hours, covers about 5 miles, and stops at Urbanistic, a local bike & tea shop on the corner of 32nd & Lowell for bike maintenance before or after the ride.

You can sign up here for this week’s tour.

BikeDenver pelotons will leave from nine different locations on Bike to Work Day (June 24th) at 7:00am to converge on the main breakfast station at Civic Center. We’re organizing the pelotons to engage bicyclists in each of these communities and offer a great group atmosphere for the novice to experienced cyclist to help encourage more people to ride to work on a regular basis. We’ve planned the routes, now we need YOUR help to lead rides from your neighborhood and promote the ride to your friends, colleagues and neighbors. We’re also looking for community leaders who’ll commit to riding along with us. If you’d like to join us in this role, or suggest someone else, please contact Jamie Medina (jcmchef@comcast.net). City Planner Gideon Berger will present a PowerPoint presentation on Denver’s Living Streets Initiative at our May 14 meeting at 6pm.  The meeting will be held in the 2nd floor conference room of the Alliance Center (1536 Wynkoop Street) and is open to the public and anyone interested in learning more about bicycling in Denver.

On Friday May 15, you can also catch a free screening of the PBS documentary Blueprint America: Road to the Future and join a discussion about living streets in our region. The latest program in the PBS multi-platform initiative on America’s aging infrastructure, Blueprint America: Road to the Future examines the growth and development of the American city. The documentary goes to three cities – Denver, Portland, and New York – to see the road each took to their present-day landscapes. Host Miles O’Brien examines the steps our country must take to keep our nation competitive in a global economy, while addressing the realities of climate change, diminishing natural resources and population growth.

See a preview at: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/blueprintamerica/reports/road-to-the-future/video-preview/549/

The screening will be held at the Starz FilmCenter. It is free, but you must RSVP on the website
