Liz says: “I ride to work to not only save on fuel, but I also get my workout in for the day because I’m not always able to obtain one at work. I have several bikes in my garage and primarily ride mountain bikes, but my ride of choice for the city is a fixed-gear singlespeed that was handmade by a builder in Fort Collins. It’s like riding a piece of art.”

BikeDenver’s Bike Hero of the Month Awards highlight different people each month, and help encourage other people to bike by telling the Hero’s personal story. The goal of the Bike Hero Awards Program is to showcase the diversity of citizen-cyclists and the people who support them in Denver.

BikeDenver’s Executive Director Piep van Heuven says: “We introduced the Bike Hero awards because we want to encourage a friendly environment for and public image of bicyclists in Denver. One of the ways we can do this is to showcase the different faces of and great stories about people in our community, like Liz, who ride bikes or help others get out there and ride. Through the Bike Hero awards, BikeDenver honors bicyclists of all ages and walks of life, from the first time bicyclist to the rain or shine bicyclist! We all know people (our neighbors, co-workers, family members or community leaders) who inspire us to reach for the handlebars instead of the car keys. Take a moment to look around you and help BikeDenver recognize the people in our community who are making a difference for Denver, one ride at a time!”

ARTCRANK.

DENVER, (July 28, 2010) – Recently voted one of America’s Best Bike Cities by Bicycle Magazine, Denver is about to play host to a poster show that appeals to art-savvy hipsters and scruffy single-speeders alike. ARTCRANK, billed as “A poster party for bike people,” showcases the bicycle-inspired poster artwork of local artists. The show opens on Saturday, September 4 at the Lisa Koslowski Gallery in Denver’s River North Arts District, and runs through Saturday, September 11. Admission is free, and copies of all posters will sell for $30.

The show started in Minneapolis in 2007, and has since expanded to Denver, Des Moines, Portland, San Francisco and St. Louis. In September 2010, ARTCRANK will make its international debut in London. The first-ever ARTCRANK Denver opening in 2009 attracted more than 700 people, and founder Charles Youel expects attendance at this year’s opening night party to top 1,000. “Denver was the show I’d ever done outside of Minneapolis, and the turnout last year really blew me away,” says Youel.

Denver’s own Josh and Tran Wills teamed up with Youel to bring ARTCRANK to Denver in 2009, and have an even bigger show planned for this year. The Lisa Koslowski Gallery will be packed with posters by 56 artists, and Josh Wills expects them to sell like hotcakes. “Last year, we had lines stretching out the door,” Wills says, adding “This year, we’re ready: more posters, bigger space, more volunteers.”

This year’s show overlaps with the Bicycle Film Festival, which runs from September 9-11, a coincidence that Youel couldn’t be happier about: “This is a great bike town, and there’s so much amazing creative talent here. When you put the two together, great things are going to happen.”

# # #

What people are saying:

“I consider the health of District 9 communities one of my highest priorities. Creating more safe alternatives for people to bike and walk is a key element to healthy neighborhoods and this is why I am so excited about the important work Bike Denver is doing!” ~Councilwoman Judy Montero

“The Mariposa bike lane provides an enhanced connection for area residents to access important destinations, such as transit, parks, and recreation centers, by bicycle.” ~Emily Kreisa, Senior City Planner for bicycle and pedestrian issues

“The community’s vision here (for South Lincoln) is for residents to live a safe and healthy lifestyle. The Mariposa Bike lane is one element of that vision. DHA’s redevelopment of the South Lincoln Homes incorporates this and other elements of that vision, like connections to services and sustainable, affordable housing. We are excited to be collaborating with Councilwoman Montero, the City of Denver, Bike Denver and other partners in making the community’s vision a reality.” ~Ismael Guerrero, Executive Director DHA

“Denver residents are fortunate to be able to take advantage of the many individual and community benefits of bicycling and the Marioposa bike lane will help bring these opportunities directly to Denver Westside! Our health, environment, and quality of life improve when more of us are on two-wheels, plus, biking is a great affordable and convenient transportation choice for all of us. Kudos, Denver! See you on the bike lane!” ~Piep van Heuven, Executive Director BikeDenver
