Tuesday morning, yours truly, Josh B. and Nick B. got to help with media day for the DNC Bike Project. The early news shows wanted to feature it, and the bike building staff was not going to be there until the very reasonable hour of 9:00 AM. We volunteered to fill the four hours between 5 and 9, and put together bikes for the project in front of the cameras. We mostly assembled Specialized Centrums, which are pretty slick bikes - single speed with disc brakes - and totally fun to skid around on.
The most impressive thing is that this 30,000 square foot warehouse is getting full of bikes, and only 650 of the 1,000 are fully assembled so far, here’s what that looks like:
That’s a lot of bikes!

You can sign up to ride bikes during the DNC convention here: http://www.freewheelinwaytogo.com
If you’re in Minneapolis / St. Paul, Humana and BikesBelong are doing the same thing up there for the RNC.
One other sweet bike I tried out was the Schwinn Panther, a totally retro cruiser. This is going to be a lot of fun.
Here is Video from 9News of the event.

Will these bikes be for sale somewhere after the convention? I’ve been looking for a good single speed.

As far as I know, most of the bikes will be sold wholesale to local bike shops (not sure which ones), who will then sell them as used inventory, much like they do with rental and demo fleets after the cycling season is over. I would bet a good many of these will be going to Bicycle Village, but nothing is set in stone yet.
