Spurred by cyclist deaths, Portland will be installing these bike-only areas at intersections. The boxes are in front of waiting traffic, so bikes are less likely to get hit unseen by right-turning cars. We had these in Amsterdam, and while they seem like a great idea, once the light turns green drivers will do whatever they can to get around you quickly. I eventually decided to not use them at all. Notice the mention of bicycle boulevards, which prioritize cyclists on quiet side streets instead of in bike lanes on busy streets.

Yes, I’m ambivalent regarding the bike boxes here in PDX for those exact reasons. In order for them to work at all, there must be a significant public education campaign and a few years to make any real impact.
The bike boulevards idea has been met with much applause here in PDX and works very well without much impact on drivers and their behavior.
Does Denver have any BB’s?

No, Denver doesn’t have any bike boxes or bicycle boulevards (and no plans for any, either). We can sure use your help in Denver when you get here!
